Wow. I've guessing this is a sci fi/fantasy/geeky shows list, because the majority of shows on there are of that tyoe. I mean, I love Buffy with all my heart, and I am even surprised it made Number 2. Plus, X-Files, BSG, Firefly, Angel, Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, two of the Star Treks, etc. Come on, was it one of our friends who made this list? Fess up. Either that, or we all have to admit we're a lot more mainstream than we ever thought.

This is a truly bizarre list. I mean MASH and All in the Family are two shows that jump out as belonging in many people's top ten list but completely absent here. And lots more.

I loved Buffy! the first season is a little episodic and high-schoolish and the last season is lousy, but everything in between is great. Watching episodes out of context isn't really the best way to see it, though.

Deadwood is the best thing to ever happen to television without exception.

I'd never heard of Empire before I moved here; it's quite a popular popcult magazine in the U.K., though (I often borrow issues from my British coworker and fellow geek). As several commenters have stated/inferred, it skews heavily toward fantasy and science fiction. It also skews much more heavily, if I may generalize about gender, toward stereotypically masculine tastes in genre and tone.

As for Buffy, I have a lot of affection for it; used to loooooove the show, but now it's simply like a friendly ex. I do think it's wildly uneven, and that it requires a large long-term buy-in to really pay off. (I had the same problem with Babylon 5, which I kinda enjoyed but still don't see what all the fuss was about.) That said, Buffy is a wonderful evocation of adolescence, with a really savvy use of metaphor and horror archetype; and it's got some really zippy dialogue. It also took some nifty narrative risks.

But each to her own taste, as the old woman said while kissing the cow.

Your list is probably twice as long as mine! Of course, I don't even own a tv anymore and haven't even heard of half those shows.

Any list of 50 greatest shows ever that excludes Happy Days, Taxi, Cheers, I Love Lucy, M*A*S*H, and such -- well, that list is wofully lacking

You don't like Monty Python? I never would have expected this.

(but ... WTF is Empire Magazine?)

And where's the Mary Tyler Moore Show on this list?
