I've always felt ripped-off that I've never lived in a place where Mardi Gras is celebrated. It's this entire huge festival that looks like fun, but I've never experienced it. I love holidays and hate that we miss one here in the Northeast.

Then again, I've never been to it, so I have no way of knowing if I'd like it. I wonder if I could handle that level of rowdiness. I shy away from Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade in avoidance of drunken frat boys and brawlers. Still, it's on my list of things to do once before I die.

It's not the same thing, but ... have you ever been to either of the local Caribbean Carnivals that take place each August? The big one is in Roxbury on a Saturday, the somewhat smaller one the next day in Cambridge.

But I'm one of the few people from whom she can trust that statement to be completely true. :)

Girl, you need to experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans before you die..Wow, its amazing..THe music, parades, festivities, etc is soooo much fun..Yeah you would have to deal with drunken fools to an extent but to avoid all that level of partying is easy----just dont go on Bourbon St at night :)

I had a fantastic time when I went years ago, but....yes there is a but....I only lasted about an hour of my 4 days on Bourbon Street. It really is a HUGE frat party and no mater how drunk I got it was still not going to be fun.

What I loved was the friends who I spent time with, it was kind of a reunion of college friends, going off the typical path, seeing the parades and parades and parades....there are a lot of them, with the locals. Since I had a friend who lived there got to do a BBQ event and she found us the good music outside the French Quarter.

The French Quarter is fun and the bars that we went to before things got really crazy were a lot of fun.

If you want to go for Mardi Gras then you should go, but if you want to go to New Orleans go another time of the year and enjoy the fabulous city.

New Orleans is a huge party all the time. I haven't been there for Mardi Gras but just going there the week before St Patrick's Day (Bourbon St was packed every night) I'm not sure I'd want to. Just go any time.

Here's what I imagine it would be like for you on Bourbon St during Mardi Gras:

Frat boy: "Show us your tits!" (throws up)

repeat over and over for a week.
