For a number of dear friends who are Christian:

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, a true follower of the Word of Christ lived in the White House.

Jimmy! Ach, but you were so misunderstood (like Hay-Soos himself...). I take comfort in the way Americans seem to judge their presidents' characters much better when they're no longer in office. The evil become not quite so evil (the jowl-challenged Nixon), the virtuous not quite so virtuous (we'll see what history will say about Dubya, whose heart Jesus apparently changed, if He didn't manage to do so much about his HABITS). NOW we love Jimmy Carter, the old peanut-farming, "I've committed adultery in my heart" truth-telling-to-a-fault do-gooder.

I also agree with something jimmystagger said not long ago--can't wait for the day when George and his ilk face the Jesus whose name they've been taking in vain and the first words out of JC's mouth are, "What in HELL were you thinking?" Of course, I'll probably hear the same thing...

Now do we judge our ex-presidents lighter because they're no longer in office and thus out of the scrutinous eye of The Other Party, or is it just the rose-colored nostalgia glasses that tend to color all aspects of the past?

I loved him back in the day, but I was too young to vote. I had a "Gimme Jimmy" button that I wore at school, but had to leave in my locker before going home or my parents would find out and thus have proof thst I was a commie on drugs (former accusation was not true. Latter accusation was occasionally true).

I love Jimmy even more for what he's doing today than what he did as president. My whole point is that here is a devout Christian, and Born-Again at that, whose life even at age 80 is devoted to working for peaceful humanitarian solutions to problems both global and local. I think he's lived a beautiful and inspiring life, and I'm glad he's still at it.

I was a Jimmy Carter fan at the tender age of 5 because I had a crush on his daughter Amy. I do not deny this; I am proud to state it. When Carter lost in 1980 I was as hopping mad as a first-grader could be, because that meant that Amy would no longer get to live in the White House.

And that's the story of how I became a Democrat.

Hmm. So is it fair to say that when you turn 80 and are still blessing the words of every liberal leader, you will see the light and be born again?

When I was in Atlanta, we visited the Carter Center. It was actually quite interesting and fun. In the section about his energy policy, they were showing the "Energy" Schoolhouse Rock. :) (Plus there was a terrific exhibition fromt he National Archives.)

He's been a born again for as long as I've known he existed. As for me, being born once was enough.

Yeah, I visited Atlanta in May and toured the Carter Center. I can now say I've visited presidential centers for Carter, Kennedy, Reagan and Hayes.

Rutherford Hayes' museum was on the same grounds as his gravesite, and not only was it eerily cool seeing his gravestone but the black metal perimeter gates were taken from the White House when his term ended. The Hayes center also included the official presidential "car," or coach to be more precise. I have a picture of it somewhere.
