Lately, even though it hasn't been very cold, I've found myself needing to wear my heaviest winter coat, two pairs of socks, gloves and a hat. This leads me to wonder what I'm going to do when it actually gets cold for real. My current heaviest winter coat is a beautiful, long wool street coat, but I can't do much layering under it, and I'm thinking it needs to become my November and March coat, and something warmer needs to take over for the deep winter months.
I want something just like this in black. I don't care if it's ugly, warmth is more important. While I could afford to invest the $179 for the L.L.Bean coat if I cut corners elsewhere, I'm thinking I should check around locally for stores that might have something similar for less.
Any ideas?

Date: 2009-11-13 07:16 pm (UTC)You also need good boots. The best thing about that coat is that you can hook up the hood and be toasty comfy in a blizzard waiting for the bus, and if you open the coat you can handle temps into the high 40's. Heck, with good boots you can stand in a ankle deep pool of slush/water in a blizzard and be oblivious to the elements.
What I'm saying is don't skimp on the outerwear. You might want to check out Sears for their Lands End line, it's comparable in quality to LLBean.

Date: 2009-11-13 08:55 pm (UTC)fwiw, i just bought the Delancey coat from them and quite like the fit. it's warm & cozy without feeling like i'm wearing a comforter. but i haven't been able to put it to the test in cold temps yet, and it doesn't have quite the intense temp rating that the one i linked to does...

Date: 2009-11-13 08:31 pm (UTC)Sadly though, mine was North Face and $300. Again I think it was worth every penny and I was working when I bought it so I considered it my xmas gift to myself.
My advice would be to not dip below LL Bean or Land's End in quality. You get what you are paying for. You pay more for the thicker down. You could get a cheaper coat but it would have less down i.e be less warm so you are paying for the (ugly) style and not the warmth.
Mine is 800 fill down.
If you ask me, $178 is actually on the cheap side for a jacket like that with real quality down. If you can at all justify it with your finances at the moment, I'd say do it.

Date: 2009-11-13 11:36 pm (UTC)Boots? Waterproof? I swear by Wellingtons - they are rubber and leakproof, but not exactly high fashion - however, they do get the job done. When I am out in cold weather, warm and dry feet are essential. Oh, yeah, and I add a pair of fur-lined leather gloves and a ski cap.
