Should we in the Boston area be preparing for the fallout from Hurricane Earl?

Date: 2010-08-30 04:55 pm (UTC)Time was when a prediction of "a possibility of scattered thunderstorms" would keep me at home for the entire day, only to see that the storm never materialized. Likewise with other "watch out" predictions.
Having lived through several hurricane "scares" during my almost 70 years, and also four or five REAL hurricanes that managed to find their way to Boston, I remember little to fuss about. During at least two of these storms we went outdoors and walked around, and during one of them we took a ride to Lynn Beach to see the huge waves that were generated by the hurricane.
Worry? Maybe when there's a 24-hours Hurricane Warning just before it is due to hit, which is a heckuva lot different than a hurricane watch, which is not yet in effect in Massachusetts. In that event I would tape the windows, make sure I have batteries and candles, and drop any plans for outdoor events until the storm passes.
That's what we pay the National Weather Service for: to watch.
So relax and enjoy these beautiful days. There wont be many more like this until next summer.
