Or maybe forever. It feels like it will never stop raining. Most things in my balcony garden are beginning to turn yellow from water log. No sense bringing them inside my sunless apartment because they'll definitely die there. But I wonder what this extended bad weather means for New England's farms. What effect will it have on crops?

Two years ago when we had the really wet spring, the local farms took a pretty bad beating -- lost crops, tomato blight, etc.

Yeah, that year I was experimenting with container gardening -- tomatoes, squash, and herbs. The tomatoes eventually grew, but they were very delayed and small. The herbs managed okay. The squashes never produced anything but some blossoms; in retrospect, I should have just harvested the blossoms and eaten them, having never gotten a single squash anyway.

Yuck. This year I worked so hard, too. But the peas have not yielded one pod and it's almost the end of the growing season for peas. The tomato and pepper plants are alive, but they haven't grown a smidge since I planted the sprouts 3 weeks ago. And the onions are probably rotting to mush in that soggy soil. Sigh.

This year might be a hard year for those who depend on farm shares. not to mention the farms themselves.

I'm not sure, but my mom has Seasonal Affective Disorder and she has gone all wilty. :( My dad is talking about shipping her off to visit our cousins in San Diego, and he's only half-joking at this point.
