In your opinion or according to your taste, what soup pairs best with peanut butter or PB&J sandwiches?

I'm having a hard time imagining a soup that would go well with a PB or PBJ.

Me three. Sandwich is too sweet to go with any sort of soup.

I was too. I was thinking about lunch and various likely soup/sandwich combos:

Grilled cheese/tomato soup
BLT/chicken noodle soup
Ham & cheese sandwich/split pea soup
Tuna melt/New England clam chowder (okay, I haven't actually tried that)
Panini/minestrone

Peanut butter with or without jelly is hard -- it's both sweet and savory, and is a top note flavor-wise. Maybe a squash or pumpkin soup?

I could imagine enjoying a squash soup with a peanut butter sandwich, but add jelly and all bets are off.

I think a tuna/clam chowder combo would be overkill. Tuna could go with a plain broth soup or something like "vegetarian vegetable". Clam chowder would go with a nice spinach and cheese pannini.

I just ate lunch, why am I hungry?

It really depends on the preserve and the soup. For instance, with a curried squash, anything with a sour bite would come off similarly to the tamarind raita that is ubiquitous in Indian restaurants.

I was thinking a squash or a pumpkin soup, perhaps curried.

If the jam/jelly is apricot, fig, or apple, then the pumpkin/squash soup would still work. (Grape, not so much....)

The most obvious for PB&J would be one of the various cold berry soups. I'd also be tempted to try a mildly spiced squash & apple or squash & pear soup.

Solely peanut butter is a lot easier since it's just a sweet spin on an ingredient that ends up used in savory dishes anyway. You could run with some kind of sweet potato, tomato, or cream of celery close to home, or if you're into 'bold Asian flavors,' tom yam and other spicy/tangy soups will also work well.

Oh, I think cream of celery nails it. It's reminiscent of the celery sticks that sometimes accompany a child's PB lunch. Sometime I will give that a try. :-)

PB and PB&J sandwiches are gross. Nothing goes well with them. Or, any soup goes well with them as long as you throw the sandwich in the trash.

PB on on toast is good, and goes well with a cup of coffee or tea.

The PB sandwiches I make for Alice differ from PB on toast only in that they use two pieces of bread rather than one.

That doesn't sound too bad. I think I'd have a hard time getting the proportion of PB to toast right for my own tastes, but it doesn't sound "uck."

I think the thing I find "gross" about PB/PBJ sandwiches is the texture of gooshy/sticky with soft. I like PB on toast, and I like PB on crackers. Both of which have an important crisp/crunch factor that works well with the gooshy/sticky.

I don't dip sandwiches in soup so I don't know if that is influencing people's feeling, but personally, I think a vegetable soup would go quite nicely with a PBJ. Tuna melt and clam chowder sounds nasty, though.

Yes, I was thinking vegetable soup with alphabet noodles would be a nice inner-child complement to PBJ. :-)

No soup at all. The PB & J sandwich stands alone.

Does a glass of milk count as soup?

Pretty close, I think. I would allow hot cocoa to pass as soup in this situation, and PB sand w/HC would be awesome. I'd skip the jelly though.

I've got to pile on here. I was thinking the same thing, before reading the comments.

The only correct accompaniment to a PB or PBJ is cold milk. This is a Fact not open to debate ;-)

What interesting opinions!

I don't think of peanut butter as sweet, because peanut butter with anything sweet gives me acid reflux. I usually buy just ground peanuts from Whole Foods so that there's no sugar in it. I have peanut butter and tomato sandwiches, or peanut butter and dill pickle, which I promise you is delicious. I often have peanut butter on crackers with a bowl of chicken soup. Actually, a spicy thai soup with vegetables and coconut milk goes really well with peanut butter.

Potato leek soup. Or anything potato-ey. It's too neutral to interfere with the strength of the sandwich.

Actually, growing up in Indiana, peanut butter sandwiches (no jelly) were frequently paired with tomato soup in elementary school lunches.

I’d been going to suggest cold celery soup or tom yum (although I couldn’t remember what it was called), but I see those have already been covered.
