Pain

Last night I did something terrible to my back, just the tiniest slip on the ice and my lower back has been in searing agony since late last night.

Jude was over and noticed me clutching at my back while baking and drinking wine. She did a little back work on me on the kitchen floor, but this seems to be a disk injury. There is constant shooting pain on the left side of my lower back, going all the way up my side and all the way down to my left knee.

I had to stay home from work because of it. My mom, who knows from back pain, said I need to go to the chiropractor right away. I've never been to one and have never actually hurt my back before, so this is all new to me. I'm not the type to usually complain of pain, but this one has bulldozed me.

At least I'll have a good dinner tonight. Jim is making coq au vin, and a few foodies are coming over to eat and watch A Cook's Tour. I never thought of myself as one before, but I've lately been doing ten-fold the amount of cooking and experimenting I've ever done before. Fortunately Todd is picking me up -- I couldn't walk to the end of the street in this condition.

it's too bad you don't live near here. my husband is a massage therapist and is excellent at fixing basically anything you can break except bones. we both HATE chiropractors. i would look into a skilled, nationally certified massage therapist first. if you absolutely must go to a chiroprator, choose someone who has been practicing for 5-10 years. no one older or more experienced than that. the profession really did have lower standards before that and many older chiropractors are quack-like.

i hope you feel better.

Thanks much. I would do just about anything to make it stop. Even my left eye hurts -- the whole side is ripped with pain. Can't believe I'm going to a dinner party tonight, but I can't stand missing things I've been looking forward to. :-( I even made bread pudding.

OWWWWWWWWW!!!!

I highly recommend Dr. Candace Maddalo 617-547-4444. She's at 257 Cambridge Street, down near Lechmere. She is incredibly thorough and effective and has worked on myself, my elder sister, and several of my friends.

Poor thing!

Does she take Blue Cross/Blue Shield, I wonder? I'm too poor to pay on my own.

Ack! I didn't realize it was that bad. Not good to play down pain that way. :( I'm sorry I couldn't help more. I like chiros, personally, but can't recommend anyone around here since the one I used to go to moved north. Seeing someone sounds like a good idea. (Unfortunately, if your BCBS is like mine, chiro coverage is pretty weak.)

Do you have any history of sciatica? Do you get any relief from the face-down knee-bent position?

I'm not sure what sciatica is. (so I guess I don't have a history of it. :-)

Jim is making coq au vin>

Does that mean you're taking a break from vegetarianism?

That didn't work out (the vegetarianism). I gave it a good try, and I'm veg on about half the days of any week, but 100% just didn't work out for me.

Yeah--I tried it for a while in college and it wasn't for me, either. So it goes.

I have a Chiropractor in Arlington, but i don't think that's terribly convenient for you. However, if you need one, he's around. And I can come pick you up.

I do hope you are feeling better, soon.

I hope you feel better soon. I had a bad back injury about three years ago and it was horrible.
